This is the one and only representative of the family Lethrinidae in Hawaii, the Bigeye emperor (Monotaxis grandoculis), or "Mu" in Hawaiian. Besides being interesting and beautiful fish, they have crushing molars (not visible here) that look surprisingly like mammal teeth--see John Hoover's "Ultimate Guide to Hawaiian Reef Fishes" for an interesting story involving M. Grandoculis teeth and University of Hawaii Ichthyologist John Randall.
